CHANNEL & NORTH SEA PILOTAGE
Introduction
Channel and North Sea waters are among the most dangerous due to prevailing weather conditions – poor visibility and/or bad weather- in one of the most congested shipping area in the world.

Over 400 daily movements through the Dover Strait coupled to ferries crossing between the Continent and England atop of traditional fishing activities in the area result in one of the densest traffic area in the world. The development of industrial offshore activities enhanced the risk of accident and subsequent pollution not to mention the countless underwater hazards to navigation.

An ever increasing demand put on ships’ more and more restricted crews doesn’t fit with the tightest regulations in force in this area and the required VTS and port communications procedures.

With the advent of bigger and faster ships and the competition for tighter schedules, Channel & NorthSea Pilotage - Le Pilotage Hauturier was created in 1971 to meet these necessities and improve the safe passage of vessels in the area.
